Perranporth / Perran Sands
Beach Overview
Another amazing 3 miles of pristine Cornish sand. Due to it facing west it takes the full force of any Atlantic swell! You can only kite on this beach at two locations due to ZONING and this is in operation all year round. Most access points to the beach will clearly mark the restricted zones and they are always clear of the Lifeguard areas.
The southern Village end will offer you the option to kite around mid to low tide only and you have to walk across the beach, passing the Watering Hole and the Surf Life Saving Club, towards the rocky promontory. Here you will find a good area for playing in waves and in the space between them. There is parking in front of the beach or up on the cliffs that give you a good view down the whole 2 plus miles of beach. Parking is free in winter. As the holiday season starts, the lower beach car park starts charging before the cliff top car park.
To access the northerly Perran Sands end of Perranporth Beach drive through the Haven Holiday Camp. Check with their reception if you need to get a parking ticket from their office (they have a long season, February to the end of November, and clamp cars without valid parking tickets during this period). This section of the beach is generally useable almost all tides although you can run out of space here if there are big spring tides operating. Be warned it is an enjoyable stroll down the dunes but save some energy for the treck back up as it is always memorable!
The Perran Sands end is arguably one of the heaviest waves on the coast and there is always a reasonable amount of water moving here. It is Gusty in a southerly so I would suggest you look else where. SW, W, NW & N being best and you will usually find a few wave orientated riders venturing out here if conditions are good.
